155. Earth curvature seen from airplanes is due to image distortion and the horizon remains at eye level

"Some people claim to have seen the curvature of the Earth out their airplane windows. The glass used in all commercial airplanes, however, is curved to remain flush with the fuselage. This creates a slight effect mixed with confirmation bias people mistake for being the alleged curvature of the Earth. In actuality, the fact that you can see the horizon at eye-level at 35,000 feet out both port/starboard windows proves the Earth is flat. If the Earth were a ball, no matter how big, the horizon would stay exactly where it was and you would have to look DOWN further and further to see the horizon at all. Looking straight out the window at 35,000 feet you should see nothing but "outer-space" from the port and starboard windows, as the Earth/horizon are supposed to be BELOW you. If they are visible at eye level outside both side windows, it’s because the Earth is flat!"

One relevant point, and some more lies

Earth curvature seen from airplanes is due to image distortion through the window

If aircraft windows distort the image the effect must be small because things do not look distorted when you are on the ground.  However, at an altitude of 35,000 feet the curvature of the earth would only be very slight, so it is quite possible that any slight curvature seen is due to distortion of the image.

But for once I do not disagree with Dubay about something!  I have seen testimony from non flat Earth pilots who state that having flown to altitudes of 40,000 feet they did not see an obvious curvature in the Earth, and testimony from military pilots who have flown far higher say that the curvature of the Earth is only noticeable from 55,000-60,000 feet.

So let us assume that all observations of the curvature of the earth from a commercial airliner is due to window distortion.  That still doesn’t prove that the Earth is flat, only that we can’t use these observations to prove that the Earth is a sphere.

The horizon remains at eye level

Next up is the claim that the horizon remains at eye level, a repeat from proof 2. Again, flat earthers simply refuse to comprehend the size of the Earth and how it affects their “common sense” conclusions.

Rising from ground level to 35,000 feet the angle at which the horizon is viewed will differ by only 3.3 degrees.  This is not a difference that you are able to notice with the naked eye, especially as you are climbing gradually to that altitude.  The claim that you would have to “look down” is just another lie.

The video below shows the horizon dropping as an aeroplane climbs in altitude by comparing the horizon relative to the wing tip.

The following video by the same author who is a pilot shows the head up display in his aircraft showing that the horizon is below the aircraft's horizontal plane ... ie below eye level.

At 35,000 feet you would see outer space

Last, the ridiculous claim that at 35,000 feet you would see outer space.  The atmosphere is 300 miles thick.  After a certain altitude the colour will fade out as there is less and less atmosphere for the Sun’s light  to diffuse through.  The blue starts to fade out at about 60 miles / 316,800 feet.

So at commercial aircraft altitudes you are barely more than 10% of the altitude you would need to be before the blue of the sky started to fade out, and the claim that you would see space is just another lie.
