Dubay is getting very confused.  However there are  things that would affect a hot-air balloon, fireworks  and rain as they ascend/descend which I'll attempt to explain. What we experience as winds are air movements relative to that eastward movement caused by the spin of the earth. E.g. If we were standing near the equator and the atmosphere surrounding us was rotating with the Earth at 1200 mph eastward we would experience that as a 200 mph eastward wind. Taking this step by step for Mr Dubay .... Yes, the tangential speed of the Earth and runway (at the equator) is over 1000 mph, BUT as the “proof” admits, so is the atmosphere. The plane is flying within the moving atmosphere.  A plane flying at the typical landing speed of say 160 miles per hour, is flying at 160 miles per hour relative to the atmosphere whichever direction it is facing. Because the atmosphere is moving with the ground and runway (i.e. both at over 1000 miles per hour) this means that the plane is flying at 160 miles per hour relative to the groun...

24. On a rotating Earth, west facing cannons would fire their cannon balls significantly further than east facing cannons

I will explain this in very simple terms with a experiment that you can do yourself. Buy a kids dart gun.  On a fast moving train fire one dart inside the carriage in the direction that the train is moving.  Fire a second dart in the opposite direction.   Measure the distance that the two darts travelled from you.   Assuming that you fire the darts in the same way you will find that the darts both travelled the same distance from you.   What you ...

An analogous situation would occur if you put a glass of water with ice cubes on a turntable and spin it, initially the water and ice would remain stationary.  However if you keep spinning the glass, the circular momentum of the glass is transferred to the water and the water and ice will eventually be spinning at the same speed as the glass.  The same is true of the atmosphere and the earth, and the earth has been spinning a long time. 21. Helicopters and balloons should be able to hover and wait for the Earth to move under them in order to get to their destinations
