44. Because commercial aircraft do not take the direct route over Antarctica but instead fly via the northern hemisphere the Earth must be flat

“If Earth was a ball, and Antarctica was too cold to fly over, the only logical way to fly from Sydney to Santiago would be a straight shot over the Pacific staying in the Southern hemisphere the entire way. Re-fueling could be done in New Zealand or other Southern hemisphere destinations along the way if absolutely necessary. In actual fact, however, Santiago-Sydney flights go into the Northern hemisphere making stop-overs at LAX and other North American airports before continuing back down to the Southern hemisphere. Such ridiculously wayward detours make no sense on the globe but make perfect sense and form nearly straight lines when shown on a flat Earth map.”

Dubay does not understand the Hub model that airlines operate.

There are commercial reasons why many airline routes do not fly direct.  Airlines typically operate on a spoke and hub basis.  I.e.  they have a main airports through which they route all their flights.  This allows them to service many more destinations.  For example Emirates flights nearly all fly via Dubai.

It is true that most flights do go via the northern hemisphere, but this is simply because all the major airlines with the exception of Qantas have their main hubs in the northern hemisphere.  Qantas' main hub is in Australia so most of their flights go via the southern hemisphere.

The following map shows Qantas' route map.  Their main hub is in Sydney Australia with secondary hubs in Singapore and Hong Kong,

This proof also goes to show that Dubay does not hesitate to lie in order to support his proofs.

“Refuelling could be done in New Zealand or other Southern hemisphere destinations along the way if absolutely necessary, …”.

“… however Santiago-Sydney flights go into the northern hemisphere making stop-overs at LAX and other North American airports”.

The implication here is that ALL flights stop off in North American cities (They don't) and that no flights stop off in New Zealand (They do).  E.g. Qantas QF321/QF322 (as of 2018).

The purpose of these false statements is to imply that the shortest route between Sydney and Santiago is via North American cities, because on a flat Earth map that is how it looks.  This is easily shown as false by looking at flight schedules.

Direct flights from Sydney to Santiago take about 12 hours 30 minutes.  E.g. Qantas QF27

However flights from Sydney to Santiago via Los Angeles take 24 hours 30 minutes once you have subtracted the stop over time.

How can the distance be shorter if it takes twice as long to fly?
