23. Believers in a spherical earth claim that gravity causes the atmosphere to rotate with the Earth

“Ball-believers often claim “gravity” magically and inexplicably drags the entire lower-atmosphere of the Earth in perfect synchronization up to some undetermined height where this progressively faster spinning atmosphere gives way to the non-spinning, non-gravitized, non-atmosphere of infinite vacuum space. Such non-sensical theories are debunked, however, by rain, fireworks, birds, bugs, clouds, smoke, planes and projectiles all of which would behave very differently if both the ball-Earth and its atmosphere were constantly spinning Eastwards at 1000mph.”

Dubay misunderstands everything again!

Gravity inexplicably drags the atmosphere

Let me explain.  Gravity keeps the atmosphere around the earth and prevents it escaping into space  It does not cause the atmosphere to rotate with the earth.

Fluid dynamics is a well understood science (which includes gasses).  This is a good thing because the same mechanism that causes the Earth to drag the atmosphere with it also makes an aerofoil work and keeps planes in the air.

In simple terms this is just friction.  The Earth exerts friction against the molecules in the air and moves them in the direction that the earth is moving.  Those molecules in turn exert friction against molecules above and move them in the same direction.  And so on.  With enough time the atmosphere as a whole will be moving at the same speed.  The Earth has been rotating for a long time.

Here is a  simple experiment that you can do yourself to show that a rotating ball can cause the air around it to move.

• Take an electric drill and drill through a tennis ball, keeping the ball impaled on the drill bit.  
• Turn on the drill and place your free hand near the tennis ball.  
• You will feel a breeze against your hand.  I.e. the rotation of the ball is moving the air that surrounds it.

This "proof" also claims that the behaviour of rain, clouds, fireworks etc  debunks the idea of a rotating atmosphere but did not explain how or why, so I’ll ignore that part.

Dubay also tries to imply that there is some mystery that the vacuum of space would be "non-spinning" and "non-gravitised" and exist alongside a spinning Earth.  He does not attempt to explain why.  Maybe he thinks tthat vacuum should be spinning and "gravitised".   Duh!  A vacumm is defined as:

"A space entirely devoid of matter"

.In other words nothing,  How can you expect nothing to be spinning?  Similarly "nothing" has no mass, so of course it can;t exert gravitational force or be acted on by it.

The more scientifically literate of you will understand that vacuum exists in "space-time", so it is not really "nothing" ...  but that is way to big a subject to get into here!
