101. Stars rotating clockwise in the southern hemisphere does not prove the Earth is a rotating sphere

"Sigma Octantis is claimed to be a Southern central pole star similar to Polaris, around which the Southern hemisphere stars all rotate around the opposite direction.  Unlike Polaris, however, Sigma Octantis can NOT be seen simultaneously from every point along the same latitude, it is NOT central but allegedly 1 degree off-center, it is NOT motionless, and in fact cannot be seen at all using publicly available telescopes! There is legitimate speculation regarding whether Sigma Octantis even exists. Either way, the direction in which stars move overhead is based on perspective and the exact direction you’re facing, not which hemisphere you are in." 


More lies, and irrelevant statements from Dubay

Lies:

  • Sigma Octantis (Polaris Australis) IS visible from every point in the southern hemisphere, regardless of latitude.
  • Sigma Octantis CAN be seen using telescopes.  In fact even though it is much dimmer than Polaris it can just about be seen with the naked eye.
  • There is NO credible speculation about whether it actually exists …  the ONLY people speculating are flat earth believers who have paid attention to Mr Dubay and his like.

Irrelevant claims:

  • Sigma Octantis is not exactly on the celestial south pole.  No-one claims it is.
  • The direction you are facing will have an effect the direction that you see the stars rotate. True but irrelevant,
What is relevant is that when you look at the Celestial South Pole, i.e. towards Sigma Octantis, the stars will ALWAYS be rotating around it in a clockwise direction.  It is this observation that is impossible on a flat Earth.

Don't believe the video?  Do some research ... contact any Australian or New Zealander and ask them.  It cant be too hard, there are millions of them.
This evidence is so devastating to flat earthers that there are even some who claimed that Australia does not exist.  Really!  Not that it helped the flat Earth cause.  They would also have to get rid of much of Africa and South America.

It is no coincidence that there are hardly any flat earthers in Australia.  All they have to do is look up on a cloudless night to know that the idea of a flat Earth is bogus.

Debunking Eric Dubay's 200 proofs the earth is not a spinning ball

Conspiracy Baloney aims to provide resources to counter to the influence of the crazy anti-science conspiracy theories that are out there. This blog is specifically to debunk Eric Dubay's " 200 proofs the earth is not a spinning ball", that I have found flat earthers often cite. There are quite a few resources out there that comprehensively debunk this book, but I think that one more voice can only help.  I have tried to keep the rebuttals as non technical as possible. Eric Dubay’s proofs are laughably simplistic and demonstrate an almost complete lack of understanding of maths and anything scientific or technical. A list of "proofs" that show Dubay is an idiot He also likes to give historical quotes as proofs.  Typical are quotes from the 1800’s but he even has one from before 1600!.  Not only are these opinions not proof of anything, but the fact that he can’t provide quotes from more up to date sources destroys their credibility. If Earth was a sphere the visible stars would be different

The visible stars are a big problem for flat Earthers because what we observe is 100% consistent with a spherical Earth and completely impossible on a flat Earth. Their solution?  Simply to lie about what is observed.  These lies include denials of observations that are impossible on a flat Earth and pretending that observed stars would be impossible on spherical Earth. For the latter, it could be that Dubay simply can't do simple trigonometry but I think that he is once again deliberately lying. The strange thing about this is that everyone is capable of putting these claims to the test simply by looking up at the night sky.  The fact that flat Earth believers refuse to put these "proofs" to the test tells you that they are not really interested in truth, they are only interested in feeling good about their beliefs and will simply unquestioningly accept as fact anything that backs up these beliefs.
