139. Perspective is responsible for ships disappearing over the horizon

"Not only is the disappearance of ship’s hulls explained by the Law of Perspective on flat surfaces, it is proven undeniably true with the aid of a good telescope. If you watch a ship sailing away into the horizon with the naked eye until its hull has completely disappeared from view under the supposed “curvature of the Earth,” then look through a telescope, you will notice the entire ship quickly zooms back into view, hull and all, proving that the disappearance was caused by the Law of Perspective, not by a wall of curved water! This also proves that the horizon is simply the vanishing line of perspective from your point of view, NOT the alleged “curvature” of Earth." 

Another unsubstantiated claim

The "law" of perspective of course does not explain this phenomenon.  Saying it does repeadedly does not make it so.  Perspective will make things smaller the further away they are.  It will not make them appear to disappear over a horizon.  It would be good if Dubay actually tried to explain some of his statements occasionally.

Here are links to videos that show ships disappearing over the horizon.  Zooming in does not make the boat magically come back into view as Dubay claims.  The videos that flat Earthers do show to back this up are simply videos where the ship is still in view either because it is not over the horizon yet or because it is still visible due to atmospheric refraction.   If they waited until the ship was further away it would disappear from view.




At this point flat earthers have three reposts.

  • The video is faked
  • The boat is not hidden by the horizon, it is hidden by atmospheric distortion
  • The boat is not hidden by the horizon, it is hidden by the sea swell

The sea swell argument is pretty weak because there are plenty of videos with calm seas but it is impossible for me to prove that the video is not faked, and I can’t find anything to disprove the atmospheric distortion theory either,  so I’ll just give this to flat earthers and agree that I can’t use these videos as incontrovertible proof that the Earth is a sphere.

However, this also does not constitute proof that the Earth is flat.   We will just have to agree to disagree on the cause of the observed phenomenon.

Unfortunately for flat earthers there is plenty of other evidence that points to the Earth being a sphere, and they have yet to come up with a proper proof that shows the Earth is flat.

Debunking Eric Dubay's 200 proofs the earth is not a spinning ball

Conspiracy Baloney aims to provide resources to counter to the influence of the crazy anti-science conspiracy theories that are out there. This blog is specifically to debunk Eric Dubay's " 200 proofs the earth is not a spinning ball", that I have found flat earthers often cite. There are quite a few resources out there that comprehensively debunk this book, but I think that one more voice can only help.  I have tried to keep the rebuttals as non technical as possible. Eric Dubay’s proofs are laughably simplistic and demonstrate an almost complete lack of understanding of maths and anything scientific or technical. If Earth was a sphere the visible stars would be different

The visible stars are a big problem for flat Earthers because what we observe is 100% consistent with a spherical Earth and completely impossible on a flat Earth. Their solution?  Simply to lie about what is observed.  These lies include denials of observations that are impossible on a flat Earth and pretending that observed stars would be impossible on spherical Earth. For the latter, it could be that Dubay simply can't do simple trigonometry but I think that he is once again deliberately lying. The strange thing about this is that everyone is capable of putting these claims to the test simply by looking up at the night sky.  The fact that flat Earth believers refuse to put these "proofs" to the test tells you that they are not really interested in truth, they are only interested in feeling good about their beliefs and will simply unquestioningly accept as fact anything that backs up these beliefs.
