110. Circumnavigations of the Earth are not proof that the Earth is a sphere
"Magellan and others’ East/West circumnavigations of Earth are often quoted as proof of the ball model. In actual fact, however, sailing or flying at rights angles to the North pole and eventually returning to one’s original location is no more difficult or mysterious than doing so on a globe. Just as an architect’s compass can place its center-point on a flat piece of paper and trace a circle either way around the “pole,” so can a ship or plane circumnavigate a flat-Earth."
And your point is?
I agree, saying that someone has circumnavigated the globe is not a good proof of Earth being a sphere. However, just because it is a poor argument does not mean that the Earth is flat.
What is important is that in order to navigate the oceans, circumnavigations included, sailors have for centuries done this on the basis that the Earth is a sphere. Especially in the southern hemisphere, the distances involved are so different between a spherical and flat Earth that it is inconceivable that captains would not have noticed how wrong their charts were if the Earth was indeed flat.
