20. On a spinning Earth vertically fired cannon balls should land a significant way due west
”If Earth were truly constantly spinning Eastwards at over 1000mph, vertically-fired cannonballs and other projectiles should fall significantly due west. In actual fact, however, whenever this has been tested, vertically-fired cannonballs shoot upwards an average of 14 seconds ascending, 14 seconds descending, and fall back to the ground no more than 2 feet away from the cannon, often directly back into the muzzle.”
Dubay does not understand basic laws of motion
When the cannon ball is fired it is already travelling with the rotation of the earth. It continues to move with the earth as it rotates so that it remains directly above the cannon while it ascends and descends.
Objects continue to move in the same direction at the same speed unless they are acted upon by an external force. In the experiment described there is no lateral force acting on the cannon ball, so it continues with the same motion that it, the cannon, the earth and the people worrying about a cannon ball dropping on their head all share.
In the following video you can see a ballon being dropped from a moving car. The moving car is analogous to the moving Earth and the balloon being dropped vertically is analogous to the cannon ball being shot up vertically.
The point to notice is that at the point that the balloon is released it remains in motion with the car, in the same way that the cannon ball would remain in motion with the Earth.
