131. The Moon is a semi-transparent, self-luminescent disc

"NASA and modern astronomy maintain that the Moon is a solid, spherical, Earth-like habitation which man has actually flown to and set foot on. They claim the Moon is a non-luminescent planetoid which receives and reflects all its light from the Sun. The reality is, however, that the Moon is observably not a solid body, it is clearly circular, but not spherical, and not in any way an Earth-like planetoid which humans could set foot on. In fact, the Moon has been proven largely transparent and completely self-luminescent, shining with its own unique light."

More false claims by Dubay and stated with no actual evidence as usual

Claim 1: The moon is a disc

Although it is true that a featureless sphere looks like a flat disc, the Moon is not a featureless disc.  The following evidence for the Moon being a sphere can be checked by anyone with a telescope.

a. Just look at it

I hate to resort to common sense, but since Dubay does it so often it seems only fair that I do the same.  Just look at a picture of the moon.  There are many clear pictures, but just in case you think they are fake, why not look at a couple that Dubay uses himself  in proof 144 in “200 Proofs that the Earth is not a spinning ball”.  Magnify the images of the Moon and you will see that it obviously looks like a sphere.

b. Phases of the Moon

You don’t need a telescope to see this.  Observe the phases of the moon from crescent to full Moon and back to crescent.  The changing crescent shape is EXACTLY as you would expect to see the moon if the Sun were shining on a sphere orbiting the Earth once a lunar month.

How does Dubay explain the Moon's phases?  Oh that's right ... he doesn't.

c. The changing face

Although the same face of the Moon faces earth at all times because its rotation is in sync with its orbit around the Earth, it is not perfectly in sync.  This means that it does rotate back and forth relative to the earth.  Because the Moon’s surface is full of craters you can observe the craters move using a telescope as the month progresses.  If the Moon was a flat disc the craters would never appear to move.

d. Shape of craters

If you look at the shape of the craters in the centre of the Moon, they look circular.  In contrast the shape of craters at the edge of the Moon look oval in shape.  This is EXACTLY what you would expect if the Moon was a sphere.  The nearer the “edge” of the visible Moon a crater is the more of an oblique angle we will be viewing it and the more it’s shape will be foreshortened into an oval.

e. The Moon never appears as an oval

If the Moon were a circular disc its shape would appear different depending on whether you were directly underneath it or whether you were seeing it at an extreme angle.  I.e. Assuming that the disc looked circular when overhead, when looking at the Moon from an extreme angle it would look oval in shape and not circular.  So on a flat Earth, the Moon would have a different shape at different latitudes and would change shape as it moved across the night sky.

It does not do this.  It stays perfectly circular in shape which is EXACTLY as you would expect if it were a sphere, and IMPOSSIBLE if it were a disc.

f. The Moon dropping over the horizon.

According to flat earthers the Sun and the Moon both orbit 3000 miles above the earth.  See the response to proof 143 showing that the lowest angle that the sun would be observable from would be 42.7 degrees from the horizontal.  The same calculation applies to the Moon.

Claim 2:  The Moon is largely transparent

To “prove” this Dubay points to images of the Moon during daytime.  The Moon has a definite blue colour which Dubay says is the blue sky visible through a transparent Moon.

This is of course nonsense.  To understand what is really going on, first answer the question “Why is the sky blue?”.  When the Sun's light reaches the Earth's atmosphere it is scattered by the nitrogen and oxygen gas molecules in the air.  The shorter blue wavelengths are scattered the most strongly, so more of the blue light is scattered towards our eyes than the other colours.  I.e. the atmosphere acts like a blue filter for a camera.

Next consider that the light reflected off the Moon is affected in exactly the same way.  So of course the Moon will look blue during the day.

It is also a little hard to see how a lunar eclipse could occur if the Moon was transparent.

Claim 3: The Moon is self-luminescent

If the Moon is a self-luminescent disc, please explain why the phases of the Moon exist.  Presumably Dubay believes that God has covered the Moon with lights and is selectively switching some of them on and off over the course of the month to create a nice curvy shape for us to admire like a celestial Christmas decoration.  What a shame he/she didn’t make it a little less ambiguous, maybe a multi coloured Santa’s sleigh.
